Canada SDS vs non-SDS: which route is actually faster?

SDS: the faster lane, but only if you qualify

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) targets 20 calendar days for study permit decisions from eligible countries. Nigeria was added in 2023 — a meaningful change for West Africa.

SDS eligibility — the non-negotiables

• Acceptance from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
• Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) for most provinces
• GIC of CAD $20,635 (2025)
• Paid tuition for the first year
• IELTS 6.0 overall (no band below 6.0) or equivalent
• Medical exam cleared before application

Miss any one, you're back in the regular stream.

When non-SDS is actually better

• You haven't paid tuition in full — regular stream accepts partial tuition + strong proof of funds.
• You want to apply without IELTS using MOI or other English proof. SDS won't accept this.
• Your financial capacity is strong but not in the GIC format. Regular stream accepts proof of liquid assets.

The realistic timelines

• SDS (qualifying): 3–6 weeks real-world (the "20 days" is a target, not a guarantee).
• Regular stream: 8–14 weeks typically, longer during peak.

If you can hit all SDS requirements without stretching, take SDS. If you'd have to jury-rig the GIC or fake IELTS readiness to qualify, use regular stream with a stronger file. A clean regular-stream application beats a shaky SDS one every time.
