The Canada SDS route: faster visas if you meet every condition
The Student Direct Stream cuts Canadian study-permit decisions to 20 business days — but only if every document hits every bar exactly. Here's the checklist.
Why SDS exists
The Student Direct Stream gives Nigerian applicants a 20-business-day service standard on study permits — roughly three times faster than the regular stream. The trade-off: you meet every eligibility bar, or you're back in the regular queue.
The 6 non-negotiables
- Letter of acceptance from a DLI (Designated Learning Institution)
- Proof of tuition paid — first year in full, before applying
- GIC of CAD 20,635 (2026 figure) with a participating Canadian bank
- Language test — IELTS Academic 6.0 each band / CELPIP 7 / TEF B2
- Most recent school transcript
- Medical exam completed before submission
Miss one and your file reverts to regular stream — no appeal, no refund of time.
What actually gets files approved
- GIC arrival letter — not the application receipt. Officers want the confirmation the funds are locked.
- Tuition receipt with student ID + term dates — a generic payment acknowledgement doesn't cut it.
- Consistent purpose — your Letter of Explanation should echo your LOA, SOP and past study pattern. Contradictions kill approvals.
Red flags we see weekly
- Tuition paid to a third-party aggregator, not the institution
- GIC opened with a non-participating bank
- IELTS 5.5 in listening — one underband is a refusal
- Medical exam older than 12 months at the time of approval
Bottom line
SDS is the shortest route into Canada's pipeline — if you treat it like a compliance exercise, not a storytelling one. Get each document exactly right the first time.
